Summer fun …

Have you guys been spending as much time as me checking out all the great ‘summer’ blog features floating around?

I’ve been having so much fun bookmarking, planning and making lists of all the fun things to make, eat, craft and do this summer. Due to our short summer break (only 7 weeks due to our year round school schedule) I’m trying to make the most out of each day me and my little guy have to spend together.

One of my close friends does ‘theme days’ with her kiddos. She has a houseful (five) each day and she plans out food and activities that match the theme … I’m usually exhausted after I read her posts. She really goes all out for her kiddos. So having only one in the house, I decided to take a different approach and incorporate a few ‘theme weeks’ to our schedule. This way I can spread things out and focus on one or two ideas each day.

Plan for a theme week::

  • Pick a theme
  • Pick a bible verse to go along with the theme … display bible verse on newly created chalkboard moulding (see above … love it!).
  • Pick a service oriented project for one of the days.
  • Pick 1-2 craft projects
  • Pick 1-2 activities
  • Pick 1 special baking/cooking recipe

We did a trial run last week with our theme being, “celebrate.” We had much to celebrate, like the first day of summer,graduation from Kindergarten, a be-lated Father’s day lunch, a wonderful report card and the completion of school. So we filled our days with special treats from Starbucks, Krispy Kreme and the party store (you have to have balloons to celebrate, right) and had lunch with my Dad, and a very special Friday night watching Toy Story 3 at our local IMAX and then eating out.

Other themes I’m already thinking of … Color Week, Science Week & Water Week.

Add to that a little vacation time, playdates and bbq’s and we’re going to have a wonderful summer. I’ll be sure to share our crafts and activities as the weeks go by.

But for now, if you need more inspiration … check out these great posts/summer series on some of my favorite blogs:
