I {heart} apples

I was going to share with you the two fun sewing projects I whipped up last night while my little slept and my sweets worked the night away.
Then I remembered I left my camera at my niece’s house … said project photos were on said camera’s memory card.
Why was my camera at my niece’s house?
Well because we went to the orchard this morning, of course.

It seems like I have had apples on the brain …

Last Friday my little and I headed out {along with my seester} to my parents house for a girls canning day. My little guy hung out with Grandpa all day and did ‘boy’ things while we girls tootled away in the kitchen. This is a ‘newish’ tradition that my mom and I started last year {her first real canning experience} and we got my sister in on the fun this year too.

We followed this wonderful recipe and ended up with 36 quarts of apple pie filling. Mmmmm. I love apple pie, but when I’m in a bit of a crunch for time, I just pour the pie filling into a square baking dish and add Barefoot Contessa’s topping from her Pear, Apple & Cranberry Crisp.

This also makes a wonderful gift paired with a new serving dish or tea towels.

Today my niece and I took our kiddos out to the orchards and picked pumpkins, snapped pictures and came home with a bushel of apples.

I plan to make and can some of my favorite applesauce. I follow the recipe measurements, but cook it overnight on low in my crock pot and substitute brown sugar for the white sugar.  My niece is planning to make {and can with my help} apple butter to give as a gift this Christmas.

The {Inspiration Workshop} prompt for this week was RED and I think this post about apples fits it perfectly. Not only do I love to eat apples {especially with sharp cheddar cheese} but I also think they’re so pretty to look at. God created something as simple as an apple to help sustain us and yet He showed His artistry in their shape and color. He doesn’t just do things part way, does He?

  1. I have been wanting to learn to can. I have also been wanting to have a garden. We just moved into a house with a really big yard, so I’m hoping next year we can have a garden and I will learn to can :)

  2. All I can say is “yum”!

  3. this makes me want to go pick apples… and eat and eat and eat them all!

  4. What a fun girls day! I still haven’t tried one of my apple pie fillings, maybe this week.
    Enjoy all your other canning!
