A few more {handmade gifts} …

Are you sick of these posts yet?
I hope not.

So … I know that many of you are familiar with Barn Owl Primitives {and if you’re not … please go check it out her shop}. Kristi makes beautiful ‘typography word art’ that makes this graphic design major giddy. I have ooh’d and aah’d over many of her signs … one of my own is on my wish list.

This year my bestie’s gift was the quilt I made her for her birthday/Christmas. But, I still wanted to make her a little something to un-wrap for Christmas. So, I took much inspiration from {I really ‘craft-lifted’ … is that a term? Like ‘scrap-lifting’ when you copy a scrapbook page?} her “Merry Little Christmas” print and made a little canvas using my Silhouette and paint. It was not nearly as easy as I thought it was going to be. In fact it turned into quite the time consuming project for this ‘quick and easy gift’.

For my sister this year I gave her an Erin Condren Life Planner. However, she too got her gift early {so she wouldn’t miss out on November/December planning} and I wanted to make her a little something to open too. Using the other larger canvas I had picked up, I settled on the “You are My Sunshine” wording as it is special to me, remembering my mom singing it to us when we were little.

I tried yet another technique for this canvas, again using my Silhouette, and in the end it was MORE work than the first canvas and the result wasn’t nearly as good (crooked ill-spaced lines).

Clearly, if you want a true work of art, you should leave it to the pros like Kristi. She knows what she’s doing. And had her shop been open and able to ship that last week before Christmas, I probably would have gone that route ;).

It was fun trying something new to me … and it’s always fun for me to pick up a paint brush!
