{WIWW} What I Wore Wednesday w/ the new skirt I sewed

That’s right … I’m back with a WIWW post {after almost 4 months!!}.

The photos are only slightly better than my previous WIWW posts {no need to go look, trust me on this}. I look no more comfortable in front of the camera when my Sweets is taking my picture than when I’m taking them myself. Awkward pose, poor posture … moving on … let’s focus on the SKIRT!

Oh, the cute that is this skirt. It’s my take on Simple Simon & Co’s “The Starboard Skirt” tutorial. Theirs was written for a child … I modified for me.

{Sweater – Kohl’s; Yellow Striped Shirt – Old Navy; Tights – Forever21; Boots – Born; Necklace – Lisa Leonard Designs}

My modifications::

  • I made the waistband 2.25″ rather than 1.25″ to create more definition and include a wider elastic (2″) in the back.
  • I added .5″ to the length to create a wider .5″ hem rather than the .25″.
  • I stitched my pleats down 1.5″ below the waistband so they wouldn’t ‘poof out’ so much.
  • I ended up taking in the sides a bit more for a more true fit, so I *think* I could get away with multiplying my back measurement by 1.25 rather 1.5 for gathering/elastic ease.

  • I love how quick this came together {probably an hour including cutting}.
  • I love that it took less than a yard of fabric … deal!
  • I love the look of the skirt when standing still.
  • It bunched up between my knees as I walked … I think this was the denim fighting with my sweater tights … lining would have been easy to add and would probably solve this problem.
  • I love the look of shirts tucked into skirts … on other people. I have a very high waist which and long legs which creates an odd silhouette. {It also makes for a weird driving experience as I have to slide my seat way back, but lift my seat way up to see.} I normally wear my pants/skirts on my hips rather than my waist. This of course creates a wider silhouette when you tuck your shirt in. Not sure how I can fix this issue without major surgery and I think that’s a bit extreme for a skirt.
