Modern Maple // Table Runner

So I’m a little late to the “modern maple” quilting frenzy, but I’m right on time for completing my modern maple table runner.
Here it is just over half way through October and I have a finished fall project on my kitchen table that can hang out there for at least another month.

That’s somewhat miraculous around here … starting AND finishing a project in the same year and in the same season!?!

So, even though the jury is still out on this project, I’m considering it a WIN.

I needed a fall table runner +
I’ve had the modern maple quilt block on my “want-to” list ever since I started seeing quilts pop up using the FREE, Modern Maples Throw, pattern on Lark Crafts by Amanda Woodward-Jennings {hey porkchop} +
I had fabric in my stash that would work =
finished project.

I made my table runner using {4} of the modern maple blocks. I created them from leftover fat-eigths of Joel Dewberry’s True Colors. I had three brown prints that would work and I pulled one of the print’s accent color to make a solid block in Kona Melon.

My original thought was to straight-line quilt the table runner to keep with the modern feel, but I knew that might mean it would wait and wait and wait in my WIP pile. So I decided to re-aquaint myself with some free motion quilting and I’m so happy I went that route. I think the organic feel of the free motion is a nice offset to the modern feel of the blocks/color pallet.

You might be questioning my leaf placement and really I am too, it was not how I had it laid out, but sometimes, you just go with a mistake happy accident rather than rip it out … because again, it would sit in the WIP pile.
So, it’s growing on me and I like the block a.lot.a.lot. so I see more modern maples in my future.

Here’s some that caught my eye from flickr:

Maple Leaves Mini Quilt by Cece Sews // This has me second guessing not doing straight-line quilting.

Modern Maples Mini by Rachel // These colors. ::swoon::

Maple Leaf Hotpad by Kathy Mack // Again, colors like above + a single block … this would make a fabulous fall gift with the addition of a loaf of pumpkin bread, yes?

Handmade Autumn by Happy Go Lizzy // I love the patchwork feel of this one and the addition of hand stitching.

Modern Maple Mini by Two More Seconds // Again, I am drawn to the color blocked patchwork = perfection.
