WIWW // A Capsule Wardrobe

Maybe I should have titled this … WIDWW {What I Didn’t Wear Wednesday}

At the beginning of September, inspired by this girl, I challenged myself {I love self-imposed challenges … Whole 30 anyone?} to NOT spend any $$ on new clothes until Black Friday. Shannon’s {FPFG} challenge was to only purchase clothing from thrift stores for 6 months … and while I liked the idea, I knew it wouldn’t be very practical for me as I don’t really have the time to invest in ‘the hunt’ at thrift stores. So I compromised with no clothes at all for 3 months.

Surprisingly it wasn’t that hard and in fact saved $$ in other spending as I simply avoided leisurely browsing most stores and quickly recycled or deleted mailings from retail shops.
I was also surprised that it really ‘showed me’ what I was most ‘needing/wanting’ to add to my wardrobe and it was only a couple of items.

And … I’ve stuck to it … almost.
Okay, so this whole TOMS for Target campaign {which is a limited-time-only … gah!} did me in and I did indeed buy a t-shirt {and will possibly buy a sweater mentioned below}, but will not wear until Black Friday}.

Fast forward to last week and I began to make a list of my Black Friday ‘wants’ … for some reason I decided to also research the whole “capsule wardrobe” concept that I’d heard about, but didn’t fully know about.

Well you guessed it.
3 garbage bags {donated} later and I’ve got a 37 piece Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe + 1 large bin of future capsule items

I read several capsule wardrobe posts and felt like this one best summed it up and resonated most with me was Unfancy’s “How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe”

However, I’m not sure that her budget or style {although I kinda wish that was my style} resonated with me as much as momADVICE’s “Fall 2014 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe Project

This DOES NOT have to be a costly change to your wardrobe. In fact, you could even participate in FPFG’s thrift store challenge + create a capsule wardrobe.

It’s amazing, liberating, exciting to go through every.single.piece of clothing in your closet and ruthlessly pare it down to your favorites + basics.
And the space … SO much space in my closet now.

** Note: I did NOT include shoes in my 37 pieces. I don’t have that many pairs and stick with a small number and hey, I can make this my version. **

So one challenge led to another and now I’m editing my Black Friday shopping {for me} to only include a small list of items to fill in a few gaps in my capsule.
Here is what I’m after:

Winter Capsule 2014

New jeans: Skinny + Straight Leg
{If you have a favorite of either, please SHARE!}

Flannel Shirt
{I especially love the “popover” style and a tunic length would be perfect-o!}

Classic Neutral Sweater
{For layering}

Tweed Vest
{Magically this vest showed up on my doorstep. Love.}

Ankle Booties
{This is total uncharted territory and I really have no idea what pair to pick. I like the look of the TOMS so I put them on hear, but again, I’d love to hear about your favorite … my main criteria is that they are comfortable, not too tall and are leather.}

Next week, I’ll try to share my capsule and just what I pared down to. I will tell you, it includes TWO handmade items that I’ll be featuring on the blog tomorrow!

Linking up: What I Wore // The Pleated Poppy

  1. I tried so hard not to buy anything from October to Christmas. I failed. I bought a sweater and necklace from F21 last week.

    Come link up at Whatcha Wearing Wednesday!

  2. Wow! What a great fashion fast! I LOVE your picks for your capsule! Although they can be pricey (try checking thredUP or Twice) I absolutely live in my 7 for Mankind Skinny Jeans. They are flattering and they don’t hurt. Stretchy, but not too stretchy. I only have one pair and I just wear them to death and when I have to wash them, I wear my Old Navy Rock Star skinnies.

    I also found a wedge shoe like that, but a little more tan on DSW- it is the Madden Girl shoe. I got them in black and tan. I love them- they are comfortable and look like the Tom’s I really wanted.

    Thank you so much for linking to me. I agree, I love Caroline Joy’s style, I just don’t feel like I can pull it off as a humble old mom 😉 xo

  3. I love this! I don’t know much about the capsule concept. Makes so much sense!
